Student Assistance is a promising field of study, debate and investigation and the approach to the quality of life of students in the university environment is one of them. The general objective of this research is to analyze how the student assistance policy, National Student Assistance Program (PNAES in Portuguese) has influenced the quality of academic life (QVA in Portuguese) of students at a federal university in the interior of the Amazon. The specific objectives are: i) to profile the beneficiaries of the permanence aid for the period from 2017 to 2020; ii) analyze students' perception of academic life quality; iii) analyze the challenges and/or advances in the implementation of the PNAES program to improve the quality of academic life of students. The investigation is qualitative, of the case study type, unfolded in bibliographical, documentary and empirical, whose locus was the Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará (UFOPA in Portuguese), Campus headquartered in Santarém. An electronic questionnaire (survey) was applied to students who received permanence aid between 2017 and 2020. 75 questionnaires constituted the sample. The results indicated that 77% of the students agree that without the aid they would have difficulties to keep studying. For 89.3%, quality of life is having good health, long life, 85.3% indicated that it is having housing, food and 60% associated QVA with being able to enjoy leisure time and sports activities. For 32% of students, having quality of academic life is being encouraged to develop different skills throughout their training, 29.3%, being able to participate in academic activities of teaching, research and extension and, 17.3%, feeling comfortable in the academic environment. Regarding the challenges and advances for implementing the PNAES at UFOPA, it was found that the lack of monitoring the results of the PNAES policy is a challenge. Among the advances are the creation of the Dean of Student Management (PROGES in Portuguese) and the standardization of student assistance (PAE in Portuguese) and pedagogical support (PAPE in Portuguese) policies. It is concluded that academic quality of life (QVA in Portuguese) in addition to performance in the teaching and learning process, involves other dimensions, such as physical and psychological health, social and family relationships, having leisure time and sports activities.
