Aspectos epidemiológicos dos acidentes ofídicos, no período de 2005 a 2017, no município de Santarém, Pará, Brasil

Despite being considered a serious public health problem, few studies seek to analyze the
epidemiological profile of snakebite accidents in Brazil. Given this context and the relevance
of work on this topic, this study carried out the survey of epidemiological aspects of snakebite
accidents that occurred in the municipality of Santarém, Pará, Brazil, from 2005 to 2017. This
work consisted of a retrospective, descriptive research. -analytic, of all cases of snakebite
accidents that occurred in the referred municipality, and notified by the Information System of
Grievances and Notification. The following aspects of the accidents were analyzed: age, sex,
education and race of the injured; month of occurrence; snake type; case evolution; final
classification; and sting time. Among the results, the aspects that stand out most are the number
of Bothrops snake accidents (64.3%), prevailing the age group of 20 to 39 years (37.0%), most
of them with sex. male (79.9%), highlighting the time elapsed between the bite and the care that
predominated from 12 to 24 hours (28.5%). The municipality presented discrepant averages of
national averages for the following variables: incidence of cases, length of care, case fatality
rate, severity and gender of snake that leads to death
