This thesis analyzed the relationship between ecotourism policies instituted in Belterra and also in the communities of Aramanaí and Pindobal that are within the Environmental Protection Area of Aramanaí (APA Aramanaí), which is rich in natural and cultural patrimony. The principal goal of this research was to analyze the socio-environmental relations that exist within the field of ecotourism in the communities of Aramanaí and Pindobal with respect to the conservation and preservation of the natural and cultural patrimony of these communities. This interdisciplinary research followed the methodological theory proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, exploring, within this theory, the concepts of rural area and habitus, while at the same time also basing this work on theories that deal with ecotourism and aspects of natural and cultural patrimony. Furthermore, this research aimed to comprehend how the practice of ecotourism affects the recognition of the value and importance of the natural and cultural patrimony by members of these communities. The techniques used were field observations, non-directive interviews, informal conversations, and reviews of literature, documents, and photographs. In this context, it was observed that during the study period, tourism as practiced in Belterra, Pindobal and Aramanaí was not similar to the images of ecotourism as promoted in official propaganda published by the government of the State of Pará but rather was more similar to conventional tourism involving sun and beach. It is concluded that natural and cultural patrimony in the studied communities is not being incorporated into ecotourism packages in spite of the initiatives and interventions currently underway to restore and conserve this patrimony. In this way this study demonstrated that without the necessary effort and promotion, on the part of public authorities, of ecotourism focused on natural and cultural patrimony, tourism agents are relegated to being the protagonists responsible for promoting this tourism activity in a random and disorganized manner.
