This research allows us to reflect on leisure experiences in a rural community in the
municipality of Santarém-PA, in the interior of the Amazon, the community of
Arapixuna. The region has a different context from those existing in the urban-industrial
area because, in addition to promoting leisure situations specific to the space, it
presents a different condition in its political structure, which is the large presence of
women leading the public spaces in the community. Therefore, the purpose of this
research was to apprehend the sense and the meaning of leisure for women who
coordinate social public places, political and or cultural spaces in the community of
Arapixuna and, in addition, to perceive the challenges facing in the coordination roles
and their personal experience to promote leisure for themselves and to the community.
The study developed through the qualitative approach of ethnographic contribution and
involved as research procedures, the participant observation, in which the researcher's
direct contact with the studied reality is essential; and interactive and in-depth
interviews based on guiding axes./ It was adopted the narrative and hermeneutic
analysis to interpret the field data production;/ the registers were secured by means of
a field diary, audio recordings from the interviewees and registers of images of the
spaces and leisure activities, all with the due consent of the interviewees and the
coordination of the community, once the research was submitted and approved by the
Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of IESPES / STM / PA. In this way, it was possible
to understand that the challenges of these women who lead public spaces and leisure
are permeated by criticism, prejudice and sexual division of work, and community
activities are often perceived as the leisure experience by themselves. For them,
leisure is understood as a moment of breaking the routine in their lives; in the
community it causes movement, based on spontaneous sociability, and plays an
important role in various socio-cultural spheres. Therefore, it is possible to think about
alternative activities, as well as the construction and reframing of spaces for leisure to
the community.
