The objective of this research in education and language is to understand what Brazilian Linguistics says is to treat linguistic variation in the teaching of Portuguese Language. From the second half of the twentieth century new linguistic approaches emerged around the conception of language, which, when evidencing the language as a heterogeneous phenomenon, became urgent the revision of reflexive and pedagogical practices around the main axes of Portuguese language teaching, Which implied insertion and revision of concepts and development of teaching proposals that met the demands of this change, among which is the concept of linguistic variation. Research has been developed with the purpose of discussing and describing variation phenomena and, more recently, discussing guidelines on the variation and teaching relationship of Portuguese Language. Discussions and orientations became even more evident from the late 1990s, when official teaching guidelines, the National Curriculum Parameters (NCP), incorporated and disseminated the variationist approach to language teaching. Given this, scholars have disseminated reflections and proposals for a teaching that considers the theoretical assumptions around linguistic variation. However, it is still frequent the criticism of linguists about the difficulty of articulation between the development of theory and the activity of teaching in the school environment. We perceive in this the necessity of an investigation that evidences what the linguistic studies say is variation and the orientation of Linguistics to the articulation of the variation with the teaching. For this research, we selected researches from doctors and experts in the field, authors of texts published in books, theses, dissertations and articles published in official academic / educational media, especially in the last 20 years, period of dissemination of this theme in official teaching guidelines, Which gave greater impetus to the development of such research and the need for reformulation of education in the mother tongue was more strongly demonstrated. In the researches analyzed, although we still see contradictions, difficulties of understanding about the conception of language and lack of terminological consensus among linguists, the researchers point out that teaching must start from the reflection and the students' access to the varieties of language as legitimate, Way to combat linguistic prejudice, and to offer them possibilities of choices, through the recognition of the norms effectively practiced by the speakers of the Portuguese language, especially of the socially elected norm, so that it can critically think about the social milieus in which it lives, emancipate itself.
