Family farming is qualified by agricultural production whose labor emanates from the family
itself and contributes to the subsistence and income of its users. The monitoring of the openings
of areas for clearings in the UC and survey of the practices adopted in the preparation of the
areas contribute to the management organ in the adoption of measures to reconcile the presence
of traditional communities with the conservation of nature, in addition to promoting the
valorization of the traditional knowledge of the population, as well as highlighting the role of
these communities in achieving the objectives of creating sustainable use units in the Amazon.
The objective of this work was to analyze the evolution of the swidden activities in Flona do
Tapajós to evaluate if there is a change in the productive profile of the families and to identify
the practices adopted in soil management. The data used covers the period from 2016 to 2019,
and was obtained from the ICMBio database. During this period, 1752 authorizations were
issued for opening swiddens with a total area of 1021.84 open hectares and an average of 0.96
ha for each family. In 2016 the average of hectares / family was higher (1.59 ha) while 2017
had the lowest (0.65 ha). In 2019, 416.26ha of swidden areas were opened, surpassing the years
2016 (363.5ha) and 2017 (242.34ha). The number of permits issued for clearings grew between
2016 and 2019 while the average hectare / family and total area per year declined in 2017. The
main crop in all years was cassava as well as in most cultivated areas in the state of Pará. There
was no change in the productive profile in the communities of Flona do Tapajós. Despite the
reduction in the size of the total area as well as the average area per family, it can be analyzed
that there was no decrease in the authorizations issued.
