Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Persson (Crassulaceae), known as "leaf of fortune", has been widely
used in traditional medicine, mainly for the treatment of inflammations, infections, wounds,
ulcerations and gastritis. The objective of the present study was to identify and quantify
bioactive constituents, as well as to evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial and topical antiinflammatory activities of the K. pinnata leaves. The dried and pulverized vegetable material
was subjected to maceration with methanol followed by partitioning of hexane dichloromethane
fractions into ethyl acetate. Constituents of the methanolic extract and fractions were identified
by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet detector and gas
chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry in addition to chromatographic column. A
qualitative and specific methodology was used for the detection of each chemical group. The
anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated by carrageenan-induced air bag model, according to
Vinegar et al. (1973). In the phytochemical study the presence of tannins, flavonoids and
cardiotonic glycosides was identified. In the air pocket it was verified that at the dose of 400
mg / kg promoted a significant reduction in the volume of the inflammatory exudate compared
to the control. However, it failed to inhibit leukocyte migration. The dexamethasone treated
group only reduced the volume of exudate. In this way, the results indicate that the plant
Kalanchoe pinnata can be a source of new chemical compounds with anti-inflammatory
activities.
