The Baixo Amazonas is a disputed region between the interests of large economic groups,
who seek to dominate the territory to generate profit, and the desires of the peoples and
communities that traditionally inhabit the place, whose way of life involves protecting
forests, animals, of the rivers. The existing Conflict in the Juruti Velho Settlement Project
represents how this dispute over conceptions of the world occurs, when we observe the
resistance of local residents to the impacts arising from mining – territorial conflicts,
neoextractivism/colonialism and neoliberalism. In this scenario, in partnership with the
Irmãs Franciscanas de Maristella, the Núcleo de Assessoria Jurídica Universitária
Popular (NAJUP) Cabano, organized, between 2018 and 2019, the Training Course for
Community Leaders O Direito Achado na Beira do Rio (The Law Found in the River) -
experience reported in Aguiar (2020). This action was registered at the Universidade
Federal do Oeste do Pará (Ufopa) as an extension project and aimed to assist the
communities of Juruti Velho in the defense of their territory and their cultures, through
the construction of spaces for discussion on relevant themes of the Law and Social
Sciences, applied to the Amazonian context and popular language (FREIRE, 2013;
ALMEIDA, 2015; LUZ, 2008). Thus, this research seeks to answer the following
question: To what extent the actions of Popular Legal Education promoted by NAJUP
Cabano/Ufopa in the Training Course for Community Leaders “O Direito Achado na
Beira do Rio" (2018-2019) impacted on the protection of the territory the Juruti Velho
and the cultures of local communities? The general objective is to analyze the level of
impact of the performance of community leaders in Juruti Velho in protecting their
territory and local cultures from the actions of Popular Legal Education, promoted by
NAJUP Cabano within the scope of the Training Course for Community Leaders. The
specific objectives are: to characterize the scenario of threats to the territory and cultures
present in the communities of Juruti Velho; identify the impacts on the communities of
Juruti Velho and Baixo Amazonas resulting from the completion of the Training Course
for Community Leaders O Direito Achado in Beira do Rio; map and reflect on the
contributions of the Training Course for Community Leaders O Direito Achado in Beira
do Rio for the protection of the territory and cultures of Juruti Velho. The methodology
is based on participatory action research, also adopting bibliographical research on the
themes of Popular Legal Education, Popular Education and Education in the Amazon and
documental analysis of the referred course (its project, scripts, photographs, reports and
documentary). For the data interpretation procedure, the content analysis of Bardin (2011)
and the triangulation data will be adopted. The partial results revealed that the Course
“The Law Found in Beira do Rio” contributed to the strengthening of the participants'
leadership profile, as well as to the demand for public policies and to stimulate critical
awareness with socio-environmental co-responsibility.
