Abstract

Science and scientists are constantly presented in the media, which directly influences the construction of a social image and how society understands science and the scientific method; The way the scientist is portrayed directly impacts the public's understanding of the scientific research process. This image of the scientist, which is constructed in the media, most of the time, does not reflect reality, that is, it appears in stereotypical representations, with the scientist wearing a white coat, prescription glasses, handling glassware and confined to a laboratory, thus making it possible to distort the true nature of scientific work. The aim of the work was to verify the way in which Brazilian newspapers reported the arrival and stay of Albert Einstein in our country, and to carry it out, a documentary research was carried out on the Hemeroteca Digital do Brasil platform, in communication vehicles in the state from Rio de Janeiro, referring to the period in which Albert Einstein was in Brazil. The work presents the results obtained in the research, referring to the arrival of Albert Einstein to Brazil, carried out at the Hemeroteca Digital do Brasil, in the period 1920-1929, in the information vehicles of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the then capital of the country during this period. Albert Einstein was in Brazil on two occasions, in the same year, in March, staying for just a few hours and in May, staying for 8 days. During both moments, he found himself surrounded by politicians, scientists and journalists who accompanied him on all his agenda commitments. The media outlets made extensive publicity. As the newspaper represented the main source of information for the vast majority of the population, its role was crucial in the dissemination of scientific knowledge, the written press was the vehicle through which new discoveries, theories and debates reached the general public, shaping the society's perception of science and therefore also of scientists.
