The study aimed to identify how teaching was assimilated in Santarém, in the west of Pará,
what conceptions there was in the middle of the last century, from the information published in
the newspaper O Mariano, source of the research, Catholic vehicle of Santarém, published in
the period from 1935 to 1956, with a 4-page structure - six in special editions - with relevance
of extrapolating the limits of a religious informational. He became the official communication
body of the Prelature ofSantarém, Pará, held by the Marian of the Young’s Congregation, a lay
movement of the local church. He transposed the episcopal government of three bishops and
was further longed that other existing newspapers or that emerged at that time. In the 297
editions, almost 1,200 pages printed, information on school instruction of the time, with
practices linked to religious orientation. Bibliographic and documentary research was followed
by analyzes by reference to dialectical historical materialism and critical historical pedagogy
by the understanding that, even distant geographically of global financial centers, the Amazon
is paradoxically at the center of territories, riches, and the workforce that engenders the
capitalist mode of production. Disputes that are also present in the institutions of the State and
the Church, for example, among others that constitute the organization of society. Conceptions
and educational do not occur isolated from the broader context in which the region is inserted.
This work exposes the study on the conceptions presented in the Catholic Journal about school
instruction and the relations that are established around this theme in the context of the time,
identifying the State-church relationship in public education, the reflexes of the policy of the
New State and Dogmatic guidelines in school education, basis for social thinking of the time.
